Why is Nvidia boss the ‘Taylor Swift of tech’?

Jensen Huang, the 61-year-old chief executive of Nvidia, has recently become a celebrity in the tech world. At the Computex event in Taiwan, attendees chanted his name and sought selfies with him. His company’s value has surged past $3 trillion, briefly surpassing Apple as the world’s second-most valuable company.

Huang’s rise to fame is attributed to Nvidia’s success in designing AI chips, with Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC as its production partner. This partnership has boosted TSMC’s shares to a record high. As tensions rise between the US and China over chip production, Taiwan remains a key player in the industry.

Despite living in California, Huang frequently visits Taiwan and plans to build regional headquarters there. Nvidia’s stock has risen by over 200% in the past year, solidifying its position in the tech industry, particularly in AI.

Huang’s signature leather jacket has become synonymous with his image, signaling a willingness to challenge norms. He is a tech geek at heart, having co-founded Nvidia in 1993 after working at AMD. His success has propelled him to the ranks of the richest individuals in the world, with a net worth of around $106 billion.

While Huang enjoys his rock-star status, he remains focused on promoting Nvidia’s brand and pioneering generative AI. Despite the company’s market dominance, competitors like AMD and Intel are catching up, posing challenges for Nvidia’s future success.
