Texas Longhorn LB S’Maje Burrell Faces Felony Charges For Role in April Incident

Former Texas Longhorns linebacker S’Maje Burrell was involved in a car accident last month, resulting in the arrest of defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat on a DWI charge. The incident took place on April 7 in the early hours of the morning on the 13000 block of IH 35 N.

As a consequence of the crash, Burrell was suspended indefinitely from the program for conduct detrimental to the team. Following this, he entered the NCAA Transfer Portal and ultimately left the program.

Court documents from Travis County reveal that Burrell is now facing a felony charge of collision involving injury and failure to stop to render aid. This third-degree felony charge carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

According to an affidavit obtained by KXAN in Austin, Burrell was following Sweat’s Ford Bronco on the highway when Sweat started to brake. Despite Burrell’s attempt to change lanes to avoid Sweat, a collision occurred. A witness mentioned that the airbags in Burrell’s vehicle deployed and suspected that Burrell fled the scene due to being intoxicated.

Sweat, who was recently drafted in the second round of the NFL Draft, sustained minor injuries in the accident.

Burrell, a highly rated recruit, did not play a single game for the Longhorns before leaving the team. Currently, he has not announced a new team via the transfer portal.
