Russian attacks on Ukraine energy system caused $1 billion in damages – minister

KYIV (Reuters) – Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko reported that recent Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukraine’s energy system have resulted in over $1 billion in damages to the sector. The attacks, which have been ongoing since March 22, have targeted thermal and hydropower stations, as well as main networks, causing blackouts in many regions.

Galushchenko stated that the primary damage has been to thermal and hydro generation facilities, as well as power transmission systems. Despite the challenges, he mentioned that the energy system is currently stable due to support from wind and solar power generation, aided by favorable weather conditions.

The minister emphasized that the losses are expected to increase as the attacks persist. The situation remains complex, with ongoing threats to the energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian government continues to monitor and address the challenges posed by the attacks on the energy sector.
