Sunday was year’s hottest day in D.C. and set a record

In the midst of a scorching D.C. summer, Sunday stood out as the hottest day yet. The temperature soared above 100 degrees, setting a new record. According to the National Weather Service, Washington’s official high temperature reached 101 degrees on a fairly humid Sunday.

This temperature was one degree higher than the previous record set on Bastille Day in 1954, marking the hottest day in Washington in 70 years. Forecasters predict even greater heat for Monday and Tuesday, potentially surpassing Sunday’s record-breaking high.

Despite the intense heat, Sunday marked the highest temperature recorded in the District so far this year. It was only the second time in 2024 that the mercury hit the 100-degree mark, with the first instance occurring on June 22.

July has seen its fair share of scorching days, but the actual highest temperature this month was 99 degrees on July 9. Sunday was not only hot but also notably humid, with a heat index reaching as high as 105.

Dew points in the 60s and 70s added to the discomfort, making the air feel oppressive. Clouds drifted across the sky, offering little relief from the blazing sun.

Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) declared a heat emergency in the District, extending through Wednesday. She urged residents to stay cool and check on vulnerable individuals like seniors and neighbors. If assistance is needed, residents were advised to call the shelter hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311.
