DoT to seek Trai’s view on satcom spectrum allocation, licensing process | News

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to approach the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) this month to discuss the allocation of spectrum for satellite communication services. This move comes after Trai had previously released a consultation paper on the subject but returned it to DoT following the announcement of the new Telecommunications Act in 2023.

Satellite communication technology, also known as Satcom, plays a crucial role in providing internet connectivity in remote areas and challenging terrains. Companies like OneWeb, Jio Satcom, and Starlink are actively involved in providing Satcom services in India. OneWeb and Jio Satcom have already been issued licenses for satellite telephony and VSAT services, while Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, has applied for a permit to operate in the country.

Under the new Telecommunications Act, satellite communication companies can acquire spectrum for point-to-point communications without having to participate in auctions. However, there is a need to align existing licenses, such as VSAT licenses, with the provisions of the new Act to ensure clarity in the services provided by Satcom companies.

The DoT will seek Trai’s input on pricing and allocation methodology for spectrum used in space-based communication services. The goal is to streamline the licensing process and ensure that Satcom service providers comply with the regulations outlined in the Telecommunications Act of 2023.

In summary, the upcoming discussions between DoT and Trai will focus on fine-tuning the allocation of spectrum for Satcom services in India, in line with the new Telecommunications Act.
