D.C.’s dangerous heat wave prompts warnings, cancels camps and events

The Washington region is experiencing extreme heat with temperatures reaching the upper 90s and 100s this week. Local governments are advising residents to stay indoors, keep blinds closed, take cold showers, and drink plenty of water to stay cool.

Hospitals are seeing an increase in patients with symptoms of heat exhaustion, including employees who work outdoors. It is important for people to hydrate, take breaks, wear sunscreen, and hats to prevent heat-related illnesses.

D.C. Fire and EMS have responded to cases of cramping, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. The elderly are particularly at risk as they may not want to use air conditioning, leading to potentially dangerous situations.

Residents are advised to seek relief in public buildings like libraries and community centers if they need to cool off. It is crucial to take precautions in extreme heat to avoid heat-related illnesses.
