Stanley Cup reuniting with Victoria 100 years after B.C.’s last win

In 2025, a centennial celebration will bring the Stanley Cup back to Victoria to honor the last time a team from British Columbia won hockey’s greatest prize. The Victoria Cougars of the Western Canada Hockey League claimed the cup in 1925 after defeating the NHL’s Montreal Canadiens in a best-of-four series.

The Victoria Hockey Legacy Society is planning to parade the Stanley Cup through the region in late March 2025, along with three days of activities in Oak Bay and other local municipalities. This event aims to celebrate and educate a new generation of fans about the region’s hockey history.

Furthermore, the society is also working on bringing an international hockey event to the region, possibly hinting at the 2025 World U17 Hockey Challenge. Victoria council is set to consider supporting the bid to host the tournament, which could bring significant economic benefits to the region.

The U17 challenge, involving six teams, is scheduled to take place in the fall of 2025 using the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre and the Q-Centre as venues. The Victoria Cougars were the second B.C. team to win the Stanley Cup, following the Vancouver Millionaires in 1915.

During the 1925 cup final, Victoria emerged victorious over Montreal in games played at Oak Bay’s Patrick Arena and Vancouver’s Denman Arena. The Cougars ultimately secured B.C.’s last Stanley Cup victory in Oak Bay.
