Xcel Energy Colorado customers will soon receive Energy Action Day notifications via email. The program, which is expanding to Colorado, aims to encourage residential customers to reduce their energy use during peak demand days, typically the 5 to 10 hottest afternoons over the summer. These notifications will include energy-saving tips to help customers lower their energy consumption and save on costs. Home cooling can make up about half of a summertime electric bill.
Starting in mid-June, customers will receive introductory emails about Energy Action Days. The program has been successful in Minnesota for several years. Customers have the option to opt out of the program by clicking on a link in the email.
Some energy-saving tips that customers may receive in the emails include installing a programmable thermostat, using ceiling fans to circulate cool air, opening interior doors for better air circulation, closing drapes and blinds during the hottest part of the day, turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and running appliances with full loads after the heat of the day to keep the house cooler and reduce strain on the electric grid.
