Crew members rescued from sinking mussel boat off P.E.I.’s Malpeque Harbour

A mussel-fishing boat ran aground off Malpeque Harbour on P.E.I.’s North Shore, prompting a rescue operation. The 45-foot vessel hit a sandbar and started taking on water in rough seas around 8 a.m. Monday. Five crew members were on board at the time, but were successfully rescued by a Zodiac from the New London Fire Company by 9 a.m.

Fortunately, there were no reported medical issues or injuries among the crew members. The Canadian Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax plans to tow the boat out of the harbour later today. According to Timothy Wall, a fisherman from the area, the boat was trying to return to the harbour when it struck the sandbar. Despite the dangerous conditions, all crew members were wearing life jackets and managed to safely evacuate the sinking boat.

Wall emphasized the perilous nature of the situation, expressing gratitude that no lives were lost in the incident.
