China’s new, powerful water-based battery can revolutionize EVs

Researchers in China have created a water-based battery that is safer and more energy-efficient than traditional non-aqueous lithium batteries. These new batteries are said to be twice as energy-dense as lithium-ion options, potentially transforming the electric vehicle industry.

Aqueous batteries use water as the solvent for electrolytes, making them safer than non-aqueous lithium batteries. While non-aqueous lithium batteries have high energy density, their safety is compromised by flammable organic electrolytes. These organic electrolytes are necessary for the battery’s charging and discharging processes.
