A Look At Toronto’s Cap Flexibility & Gary Trent Jr.’s Future

The Toronto Raptors are set to have another quiet free agency period this summer. The team has not been a major player in free agency since 2015 when they signed DeMarre Carroll to a big contract. With Bruce Brown’s $23 million option now on the books, the Raptors once again have limited cap space to make any significant moves.

The team currently has over $158 million in guaranteed contracts for next season, including their recent first-round pick Ja’Kobe Walter. They are also expected to give guaranteed money to their second-round picks Jonathan Mogbo and Jamal Shead. Additionally, they have a partially guaranteed contract for Javon Freeman-Liberty.

The Raptors are reportedly planning to sign Immanuel Quickley to a five-year, $175 million contract. The structure of the deal is still unclear, but they have some options to consider. They could choose to pay Quickley $35 million each season, which would provide more flexibility in the future.

Toronto also has to deal with Gary Trent Jr.’s $27.8 million cap hold this summer. They have smaller cap holds for other players as well. The team will have access to the non-taxpayer mid-level exception to sign free agents, but they likely won’t be able to use the full amount without going into the luxury tax.

It is unlikely that Trent will re-sign with the Raptors, as they may not be able to offer him a competitive salary. The team seems content to let him walk in free agency, as they have other financial commitments to consider. Overall, Toronto is not expected to make any big moves in free agency this summer.
