Experimental power plant using CO2 in San Antonio could be future of energy production

KSAT had a unique opportunity to witness the potential future of energy production in San Antonio. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) constructed a cutting-edge power plant from scratch, drawing attention for its innovative energy production methods.

The project, designed and funded by the Department of Energy, aims to showcase a next-generation power cycle. SwRI is utilizing a turbine powered by carbon dioxide, a more efficient alternative to traditional steam power generation. This innovative approach not only enhances efficiency but also benefits the environment by utilizing CO2 that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

The successful implementation of this project, overseen by SwRI’s Machinery Department director Tim Allison and project supervisor Jonathan Wade, marks a significant milestone in clean energy research. The plant, which began operations in May 2024, has the potential to power thousands of homes and is compatible with various renewable energy sources.

The plant serves as a training facility for researchers and teams from around the world, positioning San Antonio as a leading hub for clean energy research. The project’s success paves the way for future commercial applications of supercritical CO2 power cycles, showcasing the city’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
