Hawai‘i college student chosen for Dow Jones News Fund internship : Kauai Now

A journalism major from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has been named a Dow Jones News Fund intern, a prestigious honor recognizing some of the nation’s most talented emerging journalists.

Tori DeJournett, one of 86 college students selected for the program, stood out among over 1,000 applicants and is the sole recipient from Hawaiʻi. This competitive program offers paid summer internships in 62 newsrooms across the country.

DeJournett, along with 12 other interns, will undergo specialized digital media training at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University before starting a paid summer residency at Hawaiʻi Public Radio’s newsroom.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunities provided by UH Mānoa’s Journalism program, DeJournett, set to graduate on May 11, highlighted the valuable skills and knowledge gained from professors and mentors that will benefit her career.

Over the past three years, UH Mānoa journalism students have consistently been accepted into the Dow Jones News Fund internship program. Previous recipients include Keya Rivera at Pacific Business News in 2023, and Krista Rados at Hawaiʻi News Now and Nate Bek at Geekwire in 2022.

Professor Brett Oppegaard, the journalism program director, emphasized the program’s success in showcasing the capabilities of UH students on a national level. He also highlighted the university’s commitment to providing a competitive journalism education in Hawaiʻi, nurturing the next generation of trusted storytellers and truth tellers within the community.

The journalism program is part of the School of Communication and Information in UH Mānoa’s College of Social Sciences.
